Mobile Nurse Volunteer In Ghana
Give underprivileged Ghanaian healthy lives, brighter futures, and better care that they deserve. You will actively participate in house-to-house screening to check and create awareness of high blood pressure & malaria in selected Ghanaian communities.
Ghana is still a developing nation with subpar health and medical care infrastructure despite being one of the most beautiful countries in the world. In recent days, several Ghanaian people are suffering from high blood pressure-related illnesses. These diseases have now become the second leading cause of death in the country behind malaria. This situation highly prevails in rural villages where most residents are uneducated, poor, and do not get easy access to basic healthcare facilities. Here's where your invaluable service comes in. As a mobile nurse volunteer, you will join the effort to raise awareness about these diseases, distribute medicines and help the local lead a happy and harmonious life.
When you join our mobile nurse volunteer program in Ghana, you will work side by side with local mobile nurses to raise awareness about blood pressure and its related diseases. You will visit chosen communities for a minimum of two weeks and help the locals lead a happy and healthy life.
Skill/Qualification
Volunteers with background in healthcare sectors are preferred. However, volunteers with no health experience can also join as AIDES to help documenting and medicine distributing process. Other skills and qualifications needed are:
- Public Health Knowledge.
- Basic Health Care Knowledge.
- Accurate Knowledge on Blood Pressure Readings
- Knowledge in the use of the Blood Pressure Machine, Thermometer and Stethoscope.
- Ability to perform basic first aid procedures eg wound cleaning and wound dressing.
- Knowledge on health, water and sanitation and hygiene
- Must be willing to work in the rural areas among the poor and lower social class.
Required medical equipment that volunteers should bring themselves:
- Blood Pressure Machine
- Thermometer
- Stethoscope
- First Aid Kit: Hand sanitizers, methylated spirit, gauze, bandages, plasters etch
- Chocolates and candies for the little children
Volunteer's Responsibilities
Volunteers’ roles and responsibilities in this mobile nurse program depend on their skills, qualifications and experience. You will mostly go to numerous rural Ghanaian villages and provide the urgently required health services. By visiting these people in their homes, screening them for free, providing emergency medications when necessary, and quickly reporting urgent cases to the closest hospital, you will save several unnecessary deaths. You have the following roles and duties:
- House to house visits
- Checking the blood pressure of the Adults in each household and documenting the readings
- Repeating the process every other day for 3 times and giving a recommendation based on the third reading.
- Referring patients with high blood pressure to the nearest hospital for immediate attention.
- Performing basic first aid activities such as cleaning and dressing sores of both children and adults.
- Educating members of each household on the dangers of high blood pressure, education on hygiene, water and sanitation, washing of hands, family planning, malaria, sexual and reproductive health, oral hygiene
- Distributing condoms, treated mosquito nets, worm expellers, toothbrushes, toothpastes etc.
What should not mobile nurse volunteers do:
- Do not visit community without interpreter
- Do not prescribe medicines for patients in the absence of a qualified doctor
- Do not give injections of any kind to patients.
- Do not undertake any kind of surgical procedure or midwifery procedures.
- First Aid procedures can be undertaken in order to sustain the patient on his travel to the hospital.
- Any issues discovered by the nurse should be referred to the General Hospital for attention.
