8 Ways to Prevent Breast Cancer

Knowledge is Power – Prevention is Possible

Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers affecting women around the world, including in Ghana. While not all breast cancer cases can be prevented, there are several steps individuals can take to reduce their risk. At Adjah Cancer Support Ghana, we are committed to spreading awareness and promoting healthy habits to protect lives—because early action can save lives.

Here are 8 powerful ways to help reduce your risk of developing breast cancer:

1. Know Your Family History

Genetics play a role in breast cancer risk. If your mother, sister, or other close relatives had breast cancer, your risk may be higher. Share your family history with a doctor and ask whether early screening or genetic testing is right for you.

2. Limit Alcohol Intake

Even small amounts of alcohol increase your risk of breast cancer. Limiting or avoiding alcohol entirely is one of the most effective lifestyle changes you can make.

3. Maintain a Healthy Weight

Being overweight or obese, especially after menopause, is linked to a higher risk of breast cancer. Eat a balanced diet and stay physically active to help manage your weight.

4. Be Physically Active

Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week. Physical activity helps regulate hormones, strengthen your immune system, and control weight—all of which contribute to breast cancer prevention.

5. Breastfeed, If You Can

Breastfeeding for several months may slightly lower the risk of breast cancer, especially if continued for a year or longer. It also provides numerous health benefits for your baby.

6. Avoid Smoking

Smoking is harmful to your overall health and may slightly increase breast cancer risk, especially in premenopausal women. Quitting smoking is a powerful step toward protecting yourself from many cancers.

7. Limit Hormone Therapy

Long-term use of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) after menopause may increase breast cancer risk. If you need HRT, use the lowest effective dose for the shortest time possible, under medical guidance.

8. Get Regular Screenings

Early detection saves lives. Women over 40—or younger if at high risk—should speak to their doctor about breast cancer screening options such as clinical breast exams or mammograms. Also, be aware of any changes in your breasts and report them to a health provider immediately.

Let’s Take Action Together
